Sunshine suppers and dusky drinks in some of our favourite local spots
From outdoor gardens in country pubs to the waterfront restaurants, a sociable summer isn’t complete without having a beverage or a bite to eat outdoors. We aren’t always blessed with the sunshine, but we aren’t deterred!
Interestingly, the phrase al fresco is borrowed from Italian for ‘in the cool’ but it is very much a British adoption - Italians are more likely to say fuori or all’aperto - with al fresco to Italians meaning a stint
in prison! The opposite is true for us and the word al fresco is such an evocative term - conjuring the image of a sun-drenched meal in good company.
Dining al fresco used to be the preserve of our European counterparts, with British offerings not much more than a smoking area in the far reaches of a shaded courtyard. How times have changed! Pubs, restaurants, cafés
and farm shops have all upped the ante, including a wonderful range of outdoor spaces to enjoy - from bistro sets in the sun, convivial sharing benches, dappled shade under ancient tress and family-friendly play areas. We’ve seen bar-side beaches, themed gin gardens, pop up pizzerias - there really is no limit to the ingenuity and joy of these spaces.
Whether you fancy a slap up meal or a veritable feast, you’ll find us al fresco in the sunshine, sipping, munching and laughing our way through the summer, whatever the weather may bring...
