                taking flight
Shropshire has many hidden gems and we wanted to know a little more about one of them – Sleap Airfield, home to Shropshire Aero Club. We had a chat to Nathan Cross, Aerodrome Manager, about his job, his place of work and his passion for flying.
Sleap Airfield has a really interesting history and the Aero Club has been around for a long time - How proud are you to work in such a fascinating place? As an ex world war 2 RAF base, the history here
at Sleap Aerodrome is evident in the original buildings and runway orientation which still exist today. In fact, the club is run from the old control tower building. The club cafe (open to the public 7 days a week) is on the first floor overlooking the runways, the large windows provide a fantastic view of the action and surrounding area. We have a museum on site (open at weekends) which is a must visit for anyone with even a slight interest in military history.
I’m extremely proud at having been involved in the running of this great facility for over 12 years now.
You offer several flight training options - including aerobatics - who are these courses aimed at? We offer flight training on a number of different aircraft types. At any one time we have around 80 student pilots undergoing flight training with a view to gaining their own private pilot licence. We also offer advanced training to those already qualified. We are able to provide training for night flying qualification, aerobatics, instrument flying and tail-wheel configured aircraft. There is no typical customer, our youngest student pilot is 11 and our oldest in their 90’s.
A trial lesson is such a great present, is this the only way to 1st experience light aircraft flight? A trial flying lesson is the natural way that most people start in flight training. Join one of our highly qualified and experience flight instructors in a two seat aircraft at £124.99, or a 4 seat aircraft at £164.99, the value is superb.
We also offer Introductory Flights, a qualified private pilot will be happy to take those wishing to experience the joys of being a passenger in a light aircraft, prices start at £150.00 per hour.
