We speak with BMI Goring Hall Hospital and clear the air on what cataracts is and the benefits of getting them treated...
What is Cataract?
A Cataract is a condition where the natural lens of the eye becomes clouded as part of the aging process. As a result, vision becomes blurry. Cataract is very common in older people and according to a number of government sources an estimated 30% of people aged 65 years or older have a Cataract in one or both eyes.
What are the signs and symptoms of cataracts?
There are a number of different symptoms associated with cataracts. Many people experience clouded or blurred vision, frequent changes in the prescription of glasses, glare (affecting night vision), light sensitivity and an increased need for brighter light when reading.
Cataract treatment
Cataract treatment in the early stages can be managed by your Optician with a change of glasses every two years, the use of over the shoulder brighter light when reading and anti-glare sunglasses can also help. For more advanced cases, surgery may be required which involves the removal of the natural lens of the eye. A lens implant is then required to replace the natural
lens and restore vision. At Goring Hall we have a few different lens options which are suitable for different types of Cataract. YAG laser treatment is also offer at BMI Goring Hall Hospital.
